VRE verzorgt het vervoer van de buiten wijken in Northern Virginia naar Alexandria, Crystal City en het centrum van Washington, D.C. In 1992, op 22 juni, begon de VRE met het traject van Manassas, Virginia, naar Washington, DC. Bijna 1 maand later, op 20 july, 1992, de VRE nam het traject van Fredericksburg, Virginia, naar Washington, DC. in gebruik. Een van de redenen van deze diensten is het spitsuur verkeers probleem op de snelwegen I66 en I95 tussen Northern Virginia en Washington, DC. De VRE gebruikt 27 mijlen van de NS tussen Manassas en Alexandria, en 45 mijlen van de CSX tussen Fredericksburg en Alexandria. VRE provides commuter rail service from the Northern Virginia suburbs to Alexandria, Crystal City and downtown Washington, D.C. In 1992, on june 22, the VRE started service at the Manassas, Virginia, to Washington, DC. line. Almost 1 month later, on july 20, 1992, the VRE started the Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Washington, DC. line. One of the reasons for this service was the rush hour traffic on both Interstate I66 and I95 between Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. The VRE uses 27 miles from NS trackage from Manassas to Alexandria, and 45 miles from the CSX from Fredericksburg to Alexandria. From Alexandria the two lines run the next 8 miles over CSX and the final 1.1 miles into Washington Union Station over Amtrak. The total system is 81.1 miles. The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a transportation partnership of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC). |
