This article is about modeling railroad track. Most of the time railroad track is laid on ballast. Ballast is made up from crushed stone. This serves as a bed for railroad tracks and provides track stability, drainage, and support of the load carried by trains. Ballast is a natural product of ig. dolomite, quartzite, trap rock, granite or limestone.
